What Sales Funnel Should You use for Affiliate Marketing?
Okay, so before we get into the nitty-gritty of creating affiliate marketing landing pages, let’s zoom out for a moment. What’s the big picture here?
Landing pages exist within the context of your sales funnel which is why we recommend designing them first. But what sales funnel should you use for affiliate marketing?
We believe that the most effective way to sell anything online is the Value Ladder sales funnel.
It was created by our co-founder Russell Brunson who then used it to take ClickFunnels from zero to $10M+ in annual revenue in just one year (it’s at $100M+ now!).
This sales funnel has four stages:
- Bait – You offer the potential customer your lead magnet in exchange for their email address.
- Frontend – You offer the potential customer your least expensive and least valuable product or service.
- Middle – You offer the customer a more expensive and valuable product or service.
- Backend – You offer the customer your most expensive and most valuable product or service.
Ideally, you also offer a continuity program of some sort, meaning, a subscription product that generates recurring revenue.
We also recommend adding downsells, upsells, and cross sells to these core offers in order to maximize your revenue.
You can start with just a lead magnet and a frontend product and then build out the rest of your Value Lader later.
Typically, the company that created the affiliate product that you are selling is going to provide a sales page for it, but you don’t want to drive traffic to it directly from your email list.
Instead, you should create a bridge page where you pitch the affiliate product to potential customers + offer exclusive bonuses.
And then you want to drive traffic from your email list to your bridge page and then from the bridge page to the affiliate product’s sales page.
This might seem unnecessarily complicated but it’s the best way to sell affiliate products.
Here’s how Russell explains it:
Of course, in order to implement this advice, you need to have an email list in the first place, which brings us back to affiliate marketing landing pages.
Let’s discuss how to create a lead generation landing page that converts.
#1- Create a Super Valuable Lead Magnet
A lead magnet is a freebie that you give to potential customers in exchange for their email addresses.
It can be anything that they can either download to their device or access online:
- An eBook
- A video class
- A video course
- An email course
- A webinar
…etc.
What matters is that:
- Your lead magnet offers an effective solution to the problem that the potential customer is struggling with
- That problem is either the same one or related to the problem that your paid offer addresses.
It’s also important to remember that potential customers will use your free offer to determine whether or not they should invest in your paid offer.
Impress them and they will be open to checking it out. Disappoint them and you won’t get a second chance.
Creating a lead magnet for an affiliate product is more complicated than creating a lead magnet for your own product. Why?
Because you need to think about sales funnel continuity which typically comes naturally when you are selling your own product.
Your lead magnet should have a similar “vibe” as your affiliate product in terms of branding, messaging, aesthetic, etc.
Otherwise, if potential customers like your lead magnet, but then your affiliate product has a completely different vibe, they might find it too jarring to proceed.
Also, keep in mind that there’s such a thing as lead magnet blindness – a phenomenon where people have learned to ignore free offers because they get bombarded with them all the time.
That’s why your lead magnet needs to be super valuable if you want to grab the potential customer’s attention.
#2- Choose the Right Lead Generation Funnel
Okay, now that you have your lead magnet, let’s talk about lead generation funnels – the Bait stage of your Value Ladder sales funnel.
Here are the three most popular options:
- Squeeze page funnel
- Reverse squeeze page funnel
- Webinar funnel
But which one should you use?
Let’s take a closer look at each of them.
Squeeze Page Funnel
A squeeze page funnel is the most basic lead generation funnel that looks like this:
Page 1: A squeeze page
Page 2: A thank you page
This funnel can work for pretty much any lead magnet so you should probably go with it by default unless you have a reason to believe that a different funnel would make more sense for your business.
Reverse Squeeze Page Funnel
A reverse squeeze page funnel is a more advanced lead generation funnel that also looks like this:
Page 1: A squeeze page
Page 2: A thank you page
So what’s the difference between the regular squeeze page funnel and the reverse squeeze page funnel, then?
- A regular squeeze page funnel keeps the free value behind the opt-in wall
- A reverse squeeze page funnel provides some free value right there on the squeeze page itself and then asks for the potential customer’s email address in exchange for more free value. This typically means displaying a free video on the squeeze page.
The reverse squeeze page funnel works best for video lead magnets such as video masterclasses and video courses because you can use the video on the squeeze page as a free sample of the value behind the opt-in wall.
Webinar Funnel
A webinar funnel is a lead generation funnel where you use a webinar as your lead magnet.
Here’s what it looks like:
Page 1: A webinar registration page
Page 2: A thank you page
Page 3: A webinar page
Page 4: A product order page
The main idea is that you give a free 45-minute presentation and then transition into the pitch for whatever it is that you are selling. It can work well for affiliate products!

#3- Use a Proven Landing Page Template
We don’t recommend designing your landing page from scratch if you have never done it before.
It makes much more sense to simply use a landing page template that has already been proven to work.
ClickFunnels comes with a library of high-converting landing page templates that you can use to grow your affiliate marketing business!
#4- Pique Curiosity With Your Headline
One of the most common copywriting mistakes that we see people make on their lead generation landing pages is giving everything away in the headline.
The primary purpose of the headline is to convey the value of your offer but it should also pique curiosity.
The best way to do that is to emphasize the benefits of your offer without giving away the process that can help the potential customer get those benefits.
Let’s say that you are selling an affiliate product that teaches people how to make money with Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing.
And that your lead magnet is a webinar that goes over the basics of it.
Your headline should mention the benefits of being a self-published author but it shouldn’t give away the process meaning that it shouldn’t mention Kindle Direct Publishing.
That way, people will feel inclined to register for your webinar to learn more instead of dismissing it as something they already know “Yeah, yeah, KDP…”.
#5- Emphasize the Benefits of Your Offer
One of the most important copywriting principles that you need to understand is the distinction between features and benefits:
- A feature is a quality or a function of a product (e.g. “These shoes are waterproof”).
- A benefit is the value that the potential customer will get from that product (e.g. “These shoes will keep your feet dry”).
People take action based on benefits which is why you need to emphasize them in your affiliate marketing landing page copy.
How will your lead magnet make the potential customer’s life better?
Focus on that!
#6- Have a Call-To-Action Button That’s Impossible to Miss
Every landing page needs a call-to-action button. But what should it look like?
There’s a seemingly never-ending debate among online marketers about which call-to-action button color works best.
But it’s not about any particular color. What matters is that your call-to-action button stands out in the overall color scheme of your landing page. So you need to choose a color that contrasts with it.
The call-to-action button size can also affect the conversion rate of your landing page so you want to make sure that the button is large compared to other page elements.
Finally, we recommend using a descriptive call-to-action button copy such as “Get Your Free Ebook!” instead of generic copy such as “Subscribe” or “Download”.
#7- Add Social Proof
Social proof is a psychological principle that says that when we aren’t sure what to do, we look at what others do in order to determine the best course of action.
In the business context, this means that when potential customers aren’t sure what to do, they seek indications that other people trust you.
There are two forms of social proof:
- Direct social proof that relates to the offer itself such as testimonials and case studies
- Indirect social proof that relates to you as a person such as relevant credentials, accomplishments, media mentions, etc.
Adding social proof to your affiliate marketing landing page can help you increase its conversion rate.
#8- Use Scarcity but Only if it Makes Sense
Scarcity is a psychological principle that says that the less available something is, the more we tend to value it.
Using scarcity on your affiliate marketing landing page can help you increase its conversion rate.
However, it needs to make sense, otherwise, it will just look dumb. For example, if your lead magnet is an eBook, don’t say “Only 7 copies left!”.
Webinars are a type of lead magnet for which scarcity can work well assuming that the event is live.
#9- Drive High-Quality Traffic to Your Landing Page
You can have the best free offer, the best landing page copy, and the best landing page design, and your landing page still won’t convert if you send the wrong people to it.
Traffic can be divided into two categories:
- High-quality traffic – your dream customers
- Low-quality traffic – everyone else
Realistically, your landing page traffic will always be a mix of the two, but you want to increase the percentage of the former as much as possible.
One way to do that is to look at your sales data, see what traits leads that convert into paying customers tend to have in common and then use those common traits in your marketing campaigns to attract more people like that.
#10- Keep Optimizing Your Landing Page With A/B Testing!
You should view your affiliate marketing landing page as a work in progress – the initial version of it is just the starting point.
Once you have it, you need to start optimizing it.
You can do so with A/B testing:
- Create two variants of the same page – variant A and variant B – There should be only one difference between them (e.g. the call-to-action button color). That’s the element that you are testing.
- Split your traffic in half and send 50% to each variant.
- See which variant converts better and keep it.
Over time this can help you drastically increase the conversion rate of your affiliate marketing landing page.
